Currently reading: Dorothy Must Die

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share a lovely book that came in the post this week!

2014-06-27 09

Many thanks to HarperCollins UK for sending me Dorothy Must Die to review! I’ve seen this title all over Tumblr and I can’t wait to start it  and share with you! If you also have this title, let’s read it together!

Happy reading!

May Book Haul Part II

Alas! I didn’t stop buying books in May! Things got a bit out of control….

Book Haul

What I also bought in May:

Ruby by V. C. Andrews – Read/Not Signed

Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys – Not Read/Not Signed

Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz -Read/Not Signed

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart – Not Read/Not Signed

The Selection by Kiera Cass – Read/Signed

The Elite by Kiera Cass – Read/Signed

The One by Kiera Cass – Not Read/Signed TWICE!

Tease by Amanda Maciel – Not Read/Signed

Exile by Kevin Emerson – Not Read/Signed

The story with The One being signed twice is because Barnes and Noble had pre-orders available for signed first editions. At the time I made sure to check Cass’s schedule to see if she was coming to Seattle. No such luck, and I HAD to have to this book – and have to signed? Yes please! A few weeks later I noticed updates on Cass’s events page via Tumblr and lo and behold! She WAS coming to Seattle! I had other books ordered with my copy of The One, so I didn’t want to cancel my order. I figured it would be great to have her sign my name at least and now I had the best opportunity to own the entire series (minus the side stories). ALL HARDCOVER, ALL FIRST EDITIONS and now they’re ALL SIGNED WITH MY NAME!

Fangirling all over the place here – stay tuned next week for my writeup of the signing event!

Report: World Book Night 2014

This week has been an amazing week for books! To start off, two titles chosen for this year’s World Book Night (Maria Semple’s Where’d You Go Bernadette and Jamie Ford’s Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet) in the US is based (or have reference to) Seattle! The amazing authors gathered at the beautiful Elliot Bay Book Company in Seattle’s Capital Hill for the giver event on Tuesday. Of course I showed up!

World Book Night

The organizer of the event  invited new as well as past givers to come up and tell their stories about this amazing book event. (Here’s all the info). As others spoke about how and where they gave out last year’s titles, I learned Elliot Bay had some extras to give out!

Then Maria and Jamie were invited to speak.

But not before Jamie insisted on a selfie with Maria.

Adorable!

Jamie Ford spoke about his book and the hilarious tweets that teens have been saying due it being on school reading lists. I wanted to tell him that even if the impact is negative right now, later on in life it might change and that’s one of the beautiful things about books.

Then Maria spoke about her book, and she is just charming, hilarious and funny as her writing! I want to be her friend!

Then came the book signing! Authors are so cute with their books!

Afterwards, I made sure to speak to the organizer as a last minute giver. Lo and behold, I was able to snag 20 copies of Maria’s Where’d You Go Bernadette! *happy dance*

My Pretties

I couldn’t wait to be a part of World Book Night for the first time in the US (I’d been able to help with UK’s in year’s past). As I had a YA title, I wanted the books to go somewhere that helped teens in need. After a quick search I was able to find Friends of Youth, that had a housing program for homeless teens in Redmond, Washington (where I live).

I called the morning of World Book Night and Friends of Youth were thrilled for the donation of these amazing books! I dropped them off soon after and hope that teens that don’t have the access to books, or aren’t interested in them will give Maria’s book a chance! It was a great experience to be a part of World Book Night and I hope to be a giver next year!

Were you apart of World Book Night? If so, which title did you get and where did you hand them out?

Event: World Book Night 2013

Hi res WBN logo 2013

Just a quick shout out to one of the best days of the year! World Book Night has arrived for both the USA and the UK! If you’re lucky enough to be a book giver – I tip my hat to you! If you’re even more lucky to be a recipient of a World Book Night book – well I am just plain jealous!

World Book Night is (from the WBN website):

“Why does World Book Night exist? Reading for pleasure improves literacy, actively engaging emerging readers in their desire to read. Reading changes lives, improves employability, social interaction, enfranchisement, and can have a positive effect on mental health and happiness. Book readers are more likely to participate in positive activities such as volunteering, attending cultural events, and even physical exercise.1

Or more simply put, books are fun—and they can be life-changing.”

If you aren’t fortunate enough to take part in this fantastic event, please pick up a book you might not normally read and give it a go. Have a book trade with some friends, family or even coworkers! Books are unique to each person and your mind deserves to be stretched every once in a while!

Happy reading!
